The Shippen (milking parlour) was built around 1900 as part of the Grenofen Manor Estate. The Manor itself was built around 1850 by a wealthy mining industrialist. The cottage was converted to a dwelling in approximately 1980 as were the coach house and the old manor house, which contains 11 private apartments. All the dwellings are now private residences, giving the estate the advantage of total seclusion. The cottage with everything you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The Shippen is an upside-down house with two bedrooms (one double and one twin) and the recently refitted shower room downstairs, while the living accommodation and kitchen are upstairs. We’ve chosen to furnish The Shippen contemporarily, giving it that up-to-date modern feel. Satellite TV, DVD, and Netflix are provided for entertainment on those occasional rainy days.
Nearby Tavistock has a wide selection of pubs, and Devon as a whole is renowned for its fantastic food – there’s something to suit all tastes, from fine dining to great pub grub. The town has retained its high street shopping experience (a rare thing these days) and local providers supply fresh meat, vegetables, and cheeses all of which are a real treat.

A welcome pack is provided on arrival with fresh farm eggs, local bread, homemade scones and cream tea, plus milk butter tea and coffee so you don’t have to rush to the shops on your arrival.

And it’s conveniently located, just a short distance south of the stannery (tin mining) town of Tavistock with its historic Pannier market and wide selection of shops and local businesses.
Whether you’re looking for a base from which to explore the wilds of Dartmoor, or to go walking with your dog, go cycling or just to explore West Devon and Cornwall with its old mining heritage, The Shippen is the perfect retreat.
